Pest Control Birmingham AL – Black Widow Facts

“I love spiders” – said no one EVER.

Which is why it’s important to keep us on the speed dial just in case!

Did you know that black widow spiders are considered the most venomous spider in North America?

However, their bite is rarely fatal to humans. Even so, they are dangerous and if you ever see them in your home call an exterminator!

Their Appearance

The males and females look quite different. The females are the most distinctive with shiny bodies and a red hourglass-shaped marking on their belly. The hourglass can also be orange or yellow. Females are typically about 1.5 inches long whereas a male is half that size. The male can be recognized by red or pink spots on their back.

Pest Control Birmingham AL – Where Do They Live?

Their favorite place to hide is in dark places in your garage which is why its never ever good to let things build up in your garage that you never clean out or go through. This just creates the ideal environment for dangerous pests like black widows.
They can also be found in barns, basements, outdoor toilets, hollow stumps, rodent holes and in dense brush outside.

Their Bite

According to the National Geographic black widows are the most venomous spider in North America. Their venom is supposedly 15 times stronger than a rattlesnake!

Black widows are indeed very poisonous; however, they only bite humans if they’re disturbed and feel threatened.

The females bite is the one that is most feared, as it can make a human very very sick. The bite is rarely fatal unless the victim is very young or old. So your children are at risk if you have these in your home.

The black widow’s bite feels like a pinprick and pain will begin to spread rapidly throughout other parts of the body. The effects can include nausea, profuse sweating, severe pain in abdomen and back, muscle aches, hypertension and paralysis of the diaphragm, which can cause difficulty in breathing.

The pain from the bite may last for 8 to 12 hours and the other symptoms may continue for several days. There is a black widow antivenom that is available to help minimize symptoms and pain.
