Brown Watersnakes are large semi-aquatic snakes found commonly near water sources in southeast Alabama. They are often confused for Water Moccasins and seldom seen far from permanent water sources, however these snakes are not venomous. They will bite if cornered and the bite can be painful because of the snakes large size. The snake is brown to rusty brown and is marked by black square marking down its back and the neck is distinctly narrower than the head.
