Centipedes
Centipedes are relatives of millipedes that have one pair of legs for each body segment. Centipedes are generally predators that feed on any prey that they can catch.
Characteristics
- Despite their name, centipedes ranged from having 20 to over 300 legs
- Centipedes are capable of biting humans and most produce venom to paralyse its prey
- Centipedes move much quicker than millipedes and dart quickly between hiding spots
Centipedes are hunters that prey on almost any creature that they can overpower. They all possess forcipules, which are modified limbs used to inject venom and to grab onto prey. Larger centipedes are capable of piercing human skin and can induce allergic reactions similar to bee stings. Centipedes are very unlikely to be fatal to be humans however, and small species are unable to puncture the skin.
Centipede Eradication
Centipedes are a common pest in Alabama but are rarely seen because they move so swiftly and only are active at night. Since centipedes feed on insects, an infestation usually indicates that there are many insects that have infested the home. If sighted, the first step is to clean the home of any food that may be attracting insects and to seal up entry ways and cracks that pests are using to get inside. Please call a pest control professional to discuss pest proofing and other residential services.
