Currently, these “super-termites” are only found in south Florida, Taiwan, and Hawaii. Because Asian termites must live in a tropical climate to survive, they are not found outside of Florida in the continental United States, though this could change.
For example, if the breed begins to take after their Formosan parent, they could easily adapt to a more temperate climate that would allow them to live and breed throughout the U.S.
When you also take into account they grow faster and larger than their parent species, they have the potential to become incredibly destructive, regardless of where they live and breed.
The Future of the “Super-Termite”
Researchers are studying this breed to determine if there is the chance they could become sterile, which has happened when two different breeds of termites have mated in the past. However, this does not seem to be the case so far.
