Moths differ dramatically in both appearance and behavior from specie to specie. Most moths never have any impact on humans, however some species infest the human. These moths can be quite destructive as they eat fabrics, and contaminate open food sources. Moths prefer to hide dark environments and are often not noticed for a long time.

  • Moths that commonly invade homes are small and grey or brown colored
  • Moths are among the most common pests of dried food products
  • Some species will eat fabrics including wool, silk, and fur.

Signs & Indicators

  • Moths are fantastic hiders so regularly check clothing for signs
  • Webbing, droppings, and cocoons are sometimes found in closets and pantries
  • Moth adults will fly around the room late at night

Moths are related to butterflies and consist of over 160,000 different species. Most species are nocturnal and have large scaly wings and bushy antennae. Moths, like butterflies, start life out as caterpillar and go through a process called metamorphosis. It is actually the caterpillar that is responsible for the destruction of wool clothing since they consume the natural fibers in preparation for metamorphosis.

Moths & Butterflies

Its not always easy to distinguish between moths and butterflies. The main differences between the two is the shape of the antennae, butterflies antennas are club-shaped with a long shaft, while moth’s antennae are usually either feathered or saw-edged. Butterflies tend to be more colorful than moths, and are active during the day while moths are nocturnal. However there are exceptions to these rules.

Moth Extermination

Moths are excellent at going unnoticed and often times the damage can become extensive before the homeowner even notices that the moths are there. Periodically check closets, clothing, pantries, and dried food goods for the presence of moths and caterpillars. Please consult a pest control expert if you find evidence of moths to discuss permanent solutions.

I just moved to the area and called Horizons for a quote. The office staff were very helpful in assessing my needs and getting me set up with an appointment. Horizons Professional Pest Control sent a technician the same day to take care of my problem. My technician, Chad, was very knowledgable and took so much time talking to me about what I needed and telling me how he was going to address those needs. So happy with my choice.
